Assam is the most populous state in Northeastern India, but it is the second-largest in terms of area after Arunachal Pradesh. Assam shares state borders with seven other states: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, and West Bengal. Assam also has two international borders: the Bhutan border to the northwest and the Bangladesh border to the south. According to the most recent census, Assam ranks 16th in terms of area in India and 15th in terms of population.
