Qatar is a Middle Eastern country that occupies the Qatar Peninsula on the wider Arabian Peninsula. Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf surround it. The desert covers a large portion of the country. The governing system is an emirate; the chief of state is the amir or sheikh, and the prime minister is the head of government.
